It’s winter, which means the urge to hibernate is stronger than ever. And thanks to The Sleep Shirt, a brand that, in its own words, “makes good-looking nightwear that’s comfortable to sleep in,” we can do so in style.

Suzuki and St. Clair: Two sets of design students show what they’re made of

Oh, what I wouldn’t give to be in kindergarten at David Suzuki public school, sharing the coolest classroom with all my new friends and educators like Jocelyne Brent, Joanne Pizzuto, Julie St. Onge, Danielle LeCoq and Janet Benson.

It’s true I can’t spend every day there, but at least I got to spend Friday morning with them, taking in the writing centre where literacy is key, the kitchen where they learn all about healthy foods and special treats, the amazing art station, the aquariums and greenery that teach them about sustainability, and the spot where they’re currently paying tribute to polar bears and other Arctic friends.

Yesterday was even more special, because about 25 fashionistas in David Suzuki’s Wonderful World of Kindergarten invited students from the St. Clair College fashion design technician program to come talk about what it’s like to be an aspiring designer. The Suzuki kids have been designing up a storm, making everything from purses and pillows to skirts and quilts.

Instructor Elaine Chatwood was thrilled to bring along fashion illustrator Christy Litster and students Sara Guzzetti, Elizabeth Macovei, Luna Meresa and Stephen Drouin. Before you knew it, the entire group was busy sewing and cutting, draping and gluing.

“I’m just so glad to have St. Clair here,” said Pizzuto. “There’s been such an interest in dressmaking in this class in the last two years.” Not only do the kids let their creative sides run wild, they’re learning dexterity, eye-hand co-ordination, measurements, math equations … all kinds of important skills they’ll need in life.

“They don’t follow us. We follow them through the learning,” said Brent, and it’s clear the pupils take them on a delightful daily journey.

Just take a look at the class blog and you’ll see what I mean. I’ll make it easy for you: Google David Suzuki Windsor and go to the home page. Scroll down to classroom websites and click on Early Years – Pizzuto. Enjoy the ride as two sets of budding fashion designers from two schools show what they’re made of.

Forever 21 to open store in Devonshire Mall

Fast-fashion retailer Forever 21 is set to open its offshoot F21 Red at Devonshire Mall this autumn.

“It’s been our most-requested store,” Devonshire Mall general manager Chris Savard said.

Mall management approached Forever 21, Savard said. Together they worked on the deal for “several months” on what will be a 17,800-square-foot store in three former storefronts close to The Bay, Sportchek and H&M.

There’s still a lot of construction to do, he said, so there’s no target date for opening aside from a rough target of fall 2015.

Along with its staple line, aimed at young women between 18 and 24, the store will also carry items from Forever 21’s men’s line, girls’ line and plus-sized line.

The F21 Red store concept was first launched in 2014 in California selling clothing at bargain-basement price points — think US$1.80 for a camisole and less than US$8 for a pair of jeans, according to media reports at the time.

Although Target is set to shut its doors, Savard said sales growth at the mall has been positive in 35 of the past 36 months. Those numbers have helped prospective retailers see there’s demand for their products in Windsor, Savard said. Among the other “first to market” retailers to open in Devonshire Mall are makeup store Sephora and jewelry store Michael Hill.

Considered one of the fashion industry’s fastest-growing retailers, Forever 21 has more than 680 stores in 45 countries.

Business reports suggest the L.A.-based retailer is giving other stores like American Eagle Outfitters and Aeropostale (both of which have stores in Devonshire Mall) and Abercrombie & Fitch a run for their money by offering clothes at cheaper prices and getting trendy styles on the racks faster.

Office-casual clothing retailer Mexx closed its store in Devonshire Mall earlier this year, and Canadian fashion retailer Jacob closed its mall storefront recently as well. Jacob filed for bankruptcy protection last year citing, among other reasons, competition from retailers like Target and Forever 21.

Tonight, the St. Clair College Fashion Design program presents ‘Meet me in Paris,’ its student end-of-year fashion show at the new St. Clair College SportsPlex at 2000 Talbot Road West.

The show will highlight the designs of the program’s first graduating class, which launched in 2013.

The show begins at 7:30 p.m. Dancer Melissa Williams opens the show with musical theatre students from the college, followed by the collections of the second year fashion design program students. After a short intermission, the second set will open with another dance number and the first year student collections.

“The (set includes) the Recycle/Redesign project, in which the students were given old, used clothing,” says Elaine Chatwood, program coordinator and producer of the show. “They had to work in groups to redesign a new garment. The second segment is the Printed Motif sundresses, (for which) the students printed an original design on cotton fabric to create a Parisian inspired sundress. The third set focuses on the bodice, the fourth and fifth sets highlight their dress designs.”

After the curtain rises, the first ever Pop Up Shop and After Party will roll out for the guests. The Pop Up Shop is a self-contained mini store featuring the second year student designers and their collections for guests to browse through, order or purchase. “It is a great end to their two years at St. Clair College,” says Chatwood, “and will be the beginning of their new career in the fashion industry.”

Tickets can be purchased in the St. Clair Fashion Design labs, on the main campus in the FCEM building as well as at the Chrysler Theatre box office. Tickets are $15 for general seating and $25 for seats on the floor. Come say hi – I’ll be there judging the show.
